MY FIRST OLYMPIC TRIATHLON: DAY BEFORE PREP

If you read my last post, you know that I completed my first Olympic triathlon. In that post, I provided a summary of my performance and promised a detailed review of the entire event. Since I keep each post brief, I’ll use several posts. In this one, I cover the day before preparation.   The day before preparation included: picking up the information packet, attending the pre-event meeting, packing the…

My First Olympic Triathlon: Mission Accomplished!

In October of 2016, I decided to sign up for an Olympic distance triathlon. That’s a 1-mile swim, 25-mile bike and 6-mile run. My original plan was to compete in May 2017. Due to a knee injury, I dropped out of the May 2017 event and signed up for another event on July 9, 2017. My only goal for the event was to safely complete the swim, bike and run….

My longest bike ride

Today I went for the longest bike ride I recall ever taking. It was 30 miles. The intent of the ride was to exceed the distance (25 miles) that I’ll ride in my first Olympic triathlon (on July 9). My hope was to complete the ride in just over 2 hours (14 to 15 MPH pace). That didn’t happen. I left the house at 7 AM and returned around noon. Why? I…

My triathlon training -> It’s race week!

It’s Sunday afternoon. A week from now, I’ll have completed my first (Olympic) triathlon. I’ll probably be at Starbucks, nursing a not-so-Paleo venti Caramel Frappuccino and writing a summary of my experience. Here’s what I’m hoping that summary will say. I safely completed the race. I completed in just over 4 hours. I completed the swim without incident. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I completed…

Training for my first Olympic Triathlon (July 9), only 2 weeks left

Last week I completed all my planned training sessions. I stopped performing swimming drills and focused only on actual swimming. I’ll come back to the training drills after the triathlon (July 9). I completed my longest bike ride ever – 25 miles. My pace was 13.9 MPH. My hope is that I can get that to 15 MPH by July 9. My running went well. My left knee feels good….

MY FIRST OLYMPIC DISTANCE TRIATHLON IS JULY 9, 2017. THIS IS WEEK 9 OF MY TRAINING REBOOT.

Last week I completed all my planned training sessions, except my runs. As it relates to running, my left knee was feeling wonky the week before last. I decided to skip running – to let my left knee rest. (I hurt my left knee (in March).) As it relates to swimming, I continue to focus on breathing. I still don’t properly incorporate breathing into my stroke. I’ll keep practicing. This…

My first (Olympic) triathlon is in 3 weeks. I’m nervous

I was typing out this week’s triathlon training. It was causing anxiety, so I stopped. Why the anxiety? My left knee was in pain again last week, so I didn’t run – leaving last week’s training incomplete. And my ability to complete this week’s (preferred) training is in question. I have not swam in open water (lake). Talking myself off the ledge I’ve learned to counter worry with action. What to…

MY FIRST OLYMPIC DISTANCE TRIATHLON IS JULY 9, 2017. THIS IS WEEK 8 OF MY TRAINING REBOOT.

Last week Last week, I completed all my planned training sessions. You can read about it here. (Note that the training, as posted, is what on I actually completed – both the event and the day of the week.) As it relates to swimming, I’ve been focusing on breathing. I still don’t properly incorporate breathing into my stroke. That’s a problem, and I’m quite concerned. There’s not much to do about…

MY FIRST OLYMPIC DISTANCE TRIATHLON IS JULY 9, 2017. WEEK 6 OF MY TRAINING REBOOT.

Last week You can read about last week’s training here. I did not complete all my planned training. Why? I was in Japan. I had three problems. 1) Schedule (limited time for training). 2) Access to a bike. 3) Access to a pool. Note that the training, as posted, is what on I actually completed (event and day of the week). This week Week Swim Bike Run Weight training Sat…
