What’s Next: Signing up for a Half Ironman

  • I completed my first Olympic Triathlon (1 mile swim, 25 mile bike, 6 mile run) in July 2017. I found the training process and event itself enjoyable and rewarding.
  • I’ve been thinking about “what next?”.

  • After much contemplation, I narrowed it down to another Olympic Triathlon or a Half Ironman (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13 mile run). I settled on a Half Ironman. Why?
    1. I enjoy training.
    2. Small plans are not motivating. I need motivation. Deciding to complete my first Triathlon was big … I couldn’t swim. I had never biked for distance. And I was barely running 3 miles. It was motivating – like jumping in the deep end. A Half Ironman is a big step up from an Olympic Triathlon, so motivating.
    3. I need to drop another 30 to 50 pounds. The training will help. And when I am so immersed in training, I find it easier to keep my food intake on task.
  • This won’t be easy. I am thinking through my training routine now. The challenges are:
    • I’m thinking of signing up for this event: Wisconsin Half Ironman . It is in June 2018, about 8 months from now.
    • 8 months is a long time to train on a linear (progression) program.
    • I am going to use the next 2 to 3 for strength training, swimming better, cardio intensity on the indoor bike trainer and dropping weight. I’ll avoid running because I don’t want to stress my new and give it more time to rest.
    • 6 months out from the event, I’ll start a linear program.
    • I travel a lot.
  • I’ll post my training program as it evolves.
